February Newsletter 2018 09 Feb 2018

The Zone team wishes you a Happy New Year! We trust you all enjoyed a well-deserved break and your 2018 has started well. We’ve already hit the ground running and are looking forward to more success in 2018.

Looking Behind

The Zone Group of Companies had a highly rewarding 2017, with increased staff, hundreds of new trade mark filings, over a hundred new clients, several significant successful disputes and many very significant trade mark registrations.

Zone was also present last year at INTA’s 2017 Annual Meeting in Barcelona, INTA’s 2017 Leadership Meeting in Washington, D.C., the 2017 IPSANZ meeting in the Gold Coast and hosted guests during the 2017 AIPPI meeting in Sydney and the APAA meeting in Auckland.

Zone was also very proud to be a finalist for the third year in a row for IP Specialist Law Firm of the Year in the New Zealand Law Awards.

For the fifth year in a row, Zone Law was also a major sponsor of the Sir Paul Callaghan Eureka Awards established by the Rotary EUREKA! Trust. The EUREKA! Trust aims to increase young New Zealanders interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and foster young leaders who will help to bring about this vision in New Zealand.

Of particular note, Zone Law assisted in the registration of a significant laudatory word for one of its clients who has been trading in the New Zealand coffee industry and internationally. A national leader in its industry for over 20 years, our client’s creative branding strategies coupled with our legal expertise meant we were able to build a compelling case that its mark had acquired distinctiveness in New Zealand. This is a huge achievement for our client, who can now trade safely in the knowledge it is empowered to use the mark and stop infringement of their mark.

Zone Law was also successful in securing a top-level domain name for another client through the UDRP complaint process at the World Intellectual Property Office. As the client is a world leader in back treatment, securing the global domain was very important for cross border cohesion and infringement. Again, it was thanks to the knowledge and strong relationship with our client’s business that we were able to build a solid case and secure the win.

Looking Ahead

We are looking towards a successful 2018. Our most notable goal squares with two of our core values: Innovation and Strength. The Zone team is focusing on utilising new technologies to increase our data organisation. We are also continuing to build and strengthen our team as we continue to grow.

We are excited to keep building and expanding our Auckland and Wellington offices throughout this year, with more trips and meetings planned spanning New Zealand’s two biggest cities and internationally.

Once again, thank you for continuing to entrust Zone with your friendship and business and we wish you a safe, happy and prosperous 2018.
